Odor Source of Polymer Product
A large number of macromolecular compounds used as materials in today's world are made by polymerization of low molecular organic compounds from coal, oil, natural gas and other starting materials. In the process of processing and application there will be different degrees of odor problems, greatly reducing the safety and applicability of polymer products. As the increasing requirements for polymer products, especially in health, low-odor products are becoming more and more important.
The study shows that the main sources of polymer are volatiles of synthetic materials, residual catalysts and small molecules decomposed in the process. During polymer synthesis, the residual monomers and their solvents were not effectively removed. The purification devices cannot completely remove the smell.
During transportation, storage and processing, the polymer will undergo complex degradation reactions in contact with light, oxygen and high temperature. Photodegradation, oxidative degradation, melting and shear degradation, all have an effect on odor
In product formulation design, specific additivesor auxiliary materials will be added to realize specific functions in order to meet the processing and application requirements of the parts. Theseadditives will have different degrees of influence on the products, and even exceed the smell of the polymer itself.
Odor controlof Polymer Products
The composition of volatile out process called devolatilization. Efficient devolatilization could reduce the content of volatile component, thus to weaken and control odor. At present, the devolatilization equipment mainly includes flash type, thin film evaporation type (submerged liquid membrane type, centrifugal liquid membrane type, stirring liquid membrane type), liquid column (drop) type, surface renewal type, and venting extruder.
Additives and their auxiliary materials in the production process need to choose good thermal stability, low volatility, good chemical stability, good compatibility, and do not precipitate during processing and use.
Adsorption can be attempted in the formulation: adsorbent captures and adsorbs small molecules in the melting blend with other materials in the formulation to achieve odor reduction requirements. Adsorbents include physical adsorption and chemical adsorption.
The odor problem is the result of combination factors, and it is necessary to take effective measures to control and solve the causes of different gases.
